Tim Moen Elected Leader of the Libertarian Party of Canada

Ottawa, ON – At the tri-enniel convention of the Libertarian Party of Canada, Tim Moen was elected Leader of the party. Moen succeeds Katrina Chowne, Leader of the party from May of 2011 until 2014. Tim Moen is a Fort McMurray resident. This marks the first time that Fort McMurray has been home to any national party Leader. Tim is also running for MP in the June 30th by-election for the Fort McMurray-Athabasca riding.

“I’m honoured and humbled to be chosen as party Leader. People I talk to are frustrated with the state of politics in Canada and see very little hope on the horizon. Libertarians are here to shake the chains of status quo politics and bring power back to people. We are the only party that offers any hope for people to take back control over their own lives and communities,” says Tim Moen.

Moen entered into the national consciousness when he spoke out against the statements made by Neil Young comparing the Fort McMurray Region to Hiroshima after the American bombings. Moen assisted Neil Young with filming for a documentary Young was shooting at the time, and told the other side of the story.

Moen made a splash early in the June 30 by-election campaign when he introduced an Internet meme stating “I want gay married couples to be able to protect their marijuana plants with guns.” The statement was intended to be a terse statement of some of the most popular positions of Libertarianism. The meme shortly made it to the front page of reddit, the self-proclaimed ‘front page of the Internet’.

On their website the Libertarian Party of Canada states that “The mission of the Libertarian Party of Canada is to reduce the responsibilities and expense of government. This, so that we may each manage our lives to mutually fulfil our needs by the free and voluntary exchange of our efforts and property for the value that best realizes our happiness.” A few of the principals of the Libertarian Party of Canada include commitments to individual rights, property rights, constitutionality, and small governments.
